madrid

We took the high speed AVE train from Barcelona to Madrid and it was very comfortable.  What made it special fun was that we each brought picnic foods for lunch on the train and some wine and it turned out to be a great opportunity to start getting to know our tour mates better.  We shared pictures of our families back home and started to really bond.  When we arrived at the Madrid train station, we were pleasantly surprised about the tropical greenhouse and turtles everywhere.  Such a refreshing beginning to this beautiful city.

One thing about travel, and life in general, is that you always have to be prepared for "things" to happen.  It's how you handle those times that has a bigger impact.  We were visiting the Royal Palace on our first full day in Madrid.  We rented the audio tour which we highly recommend since you learn so much more. So, the tour begins in this very large courtyard and then you go inside for the magestic Palace.  Dennis and I both wear hearing aids, yes I know we look much too young for that..., but somehow I lost one of my hearing aids in the process of putting on the audio tour.  We enjoyed the tour immensely and then proceeded to visit the city some more.  It wasn't until several hours later that I realized that I had lost something.  Knowing the mileage we had covered, I felt at a bit of a loss to know where to start looking for my missing, but valuable hearing aid. Long story short, I decided that if this was the worst thing that happened to me in life, then I was pretty fortunate.  The next morning, I decided to go on a whim and speak to the Hotel Clerk about my predicament.  Keep in mind that sometimes conversations can get lost in translation, I asked her if she would call the Palace for me and check with Lost and Found.  Guess what... miracles abound and somehow my little tiny hearing aid was in the middle of this very large stone courtyard and some kind soul saw it (before it was stepped on) and turned it in.  I couldn't thank Marta enough at the Hotel Moderno for going out of her way to help me.

It was a short walk to our hotel and I'm getting very accustomed to letting someone else show me around. Our RS Guide, Amanda, gave us an introductory tour to get our bearings and we went to our Hotel Moderno  which is right in the heart of the city at the Puerta del Sol.  The location is perfect and it would be our home away from home for the next three nights.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

  • Book the Evening Tapas Tour since it's a great way to see the neighborhoods at the beginning of your stay, meet some nice people since it's a small group of 6 and enjoy some good food and wine.  135 euros for 2 and you will be very full. We went back to some of the stops the next night with some of our tour mates and they were so impressed that we actually knew our way around already. I used the Madrid City Tours

  • Go to the Azotea Rooftop bar of the Circulo de Bellas Artes one evening for a view of the night skyline and a cocktail.  The view is amazing!

  • Prado Museum

  • San Gines Chocolateria for melted chocolate and churros

  • Street performers
