Having never been to Spain, we discovered very quickly what their true passion is.... HAM!  Being from Kentucky, we are very proud of our cured country ham as well, but Spaniards take it to a whole other level. We enjoyed it many times and learned that there are very strict rules for raising the black Iberian pigs and the ham has been rated the Best in the World several times. If you are inspired to learn more, here's more info on Wikipedia

  HONORABLE MENTIONS

  • Shopping everywhere in Spain is a highlight, but Barcelona and Madrid have so many options.  In fact, I would suggest that you leave half your clothes at home and just buy things along the way.  Prices and styles are a perfect combination.

  • Anything Gaudi is a highlight.  We booked our tickets in advance for the Sagrada Familia Church and you just have to see it to understand it.  Book the extra Tower tickets with your regular tickets.  Make sure you get there before your entry time because they are very strict about when you enter. I found the process a bit chaotic because you have to get your audiosets and signage and direction is minimal, but trust me, it is all worth it.

  • Walking the Ramblas at night with an ice cream in your hand is a good memory.

  • Bought a Sim card at a nearby Vodafone store on Day 1 and had plenty of data for the whole trip all for about 15 euros.

  not so HONORABLE MENTIONS

  • Parc Guell was underwhelming, but we chose to enter for free so I guess you get what you don't pay for.

Our first meal was Tapas and Sangria so we didn't waste any time getting into the delicious Spanish food.

Our hotel NH Barcelona Centro was right in the city center so sightseeing was so easy.  The breakfast at the hotel was excellent and one of the Top 2 on the trip.

Make sure to buy tickets to see the Sagrada Familia Church which is the largest unfinished Roman Catholic church started in 1882.  The architect Antoni Gaudi devoted his life to the design and construction and the goal is to finish it in 2026 which is the 100th anniversary of his passing.  His attention to nature's seasons and the rise and setting of the sun were fascinating.  No where can you go and see history in the making since most of these UNESCO World Heritage sites have been completed many years ago.
